2nd Trimester Bumpdate

We have arrived at the second trimester! Well, actually, we are now at the tail end of it.

Second Trimester

If you missed my First Trimester bump date, you can read about it here!

As I write this, I am about to turn 27 weeks, which is crazy!! The second trimester has been full of both reliefs (from morning sickness) but also new struggles (insane amounts of heartburn).

The second trimester is roughly weeks 13 to 28, and so much has happened in this span of time! Let me start at the beginning…

I couldn’t believe it but as soon as I made it to week 14 my crippling morning sickness had stopped. I still got sick for a couple days after hitting the 14 week mark but that stopped completely by the end of the week. With all my newfound time not in the bathroom, I was able to wrap my head around this pregnancy and I got excited to plan the babes arrival.

We started to think about names, planning our gender reveal and even got to travel around the world.

Within the first parts of this trimester my body started to change and I started to eat normally again. I didn’t have any cravings except for sour gummy candy here and there but honestly, I was just so excited to be eating again that I didn’t hold back on what was going in my mouth.

During these first weeks in the second trimester I tried non alcoholic beer, ate more chicken and pasta than ever before and found out how amazing a Coke / Diet Dr. Pepper was. I also met with my OBGYN a few times and got blood drawn for scary tests that tell you if there is a chromosomal problem, genetic issues and one test that revealed the sex of the baby. But lil babe passed with flying colors.

As far as the gender goes, Will and I were CONVINCED it was boy and before I left for my Mexico yoga retreat, we did our own special gender reveal which turned out terrible.

We rushed the whole process and the evening before I left town we got confetti poppers and had my doctor give us the secret color one. I set up the camera to video the whole process and despite multiple tornado warnings (which never happen in downtown Denver) we popped the poppers. I was confused on the 1,2,3 count, Will had a hard time getting the poppers to go off, my eyes were shut for half the video, I grabbed both blue and pink confetti by accident and we had to run down the street to see what color the confetti was because the wind was so strong it FLEW a block away. We basically had to look at wet, dirty confetti in the gutter by the park to see that we were in fact - having a girl!

The video captured our disbelief (enjoy these greeeeeat pics) but also our overall stress so I couldn’t bring myself to post it. We FaceTime’d our parents after we found out and told them at the same time that we were having a girl and that part was really special.

The next day I left for a 8 day yoga retreat which was amazing for so many reasons but it also pushed me to the limits of what I had experienced so far in this pregnancy. I got back and laid in bed for 2 straight days only to turn around that weekend and head to Canada for an impromptu trip to Banff!

But before we left the country, I again haha, squeezed in another gender reveal shoot. This time though, the pictures and whole experience was more than I could’ve ever asked for. Our friend Jordan took the photos and even looking at them now I am crying at how special it was that day.

Off to Banff we went and explored the snowy tundra! This trip was on my bucket list of travel places and it didn’t disappoint! I knew this trimester would be packed full of travel so we didn’t push it too much but we got to see and do a lot of fun things.

We came back and I had a to-do list a mile long and learned VERY quickly that my body was not capable of pushing myself as hard as I had before. I would say that this was the toughest lesson of the second trimester. The changes in my mental, physical and spiritual body had dramatically changed and it was extremely frustrating. There was one week I was so exhausted that I broke down and called my doctor and said, there has to be something wrong with me - I’m so tired. Maybe there is something I can take or maybe add to my diet to pump up my energy?? The doctor just laughed and said, Bailey, you are pregnant. and then he finished the call by using Will’s new favorite quote….. Just. Be. Pregnant.

Even as I sit here in my belly band at Starbucks, I am trying to understand this idea. Luckily as you advance in your pregnancy your body doesn’t really give you the option of doing all the things you did pre-pregnancy. Like turning around to pick something up, shaving your legs, tying your shoes or getting off the couch quickly hahah!

Anyways ok back to what else happened this trimester (sorry this post is so long! but sooo much happened!).

A few days before we left for Florida for a wedding/celebrating christmas with my in-laws/baby shower trip, I chipped one of my front teeth and also had a filling fall out as I was eating a prenatal vitamin. Yeeeeah needless to say after a screaming and crying episode I called the dentist to get it fixed just hours before we left town, only to have her say, “Another lovely pregnancy symptom!”.

I had a lot of energy on the Florida trip and was able to see and do a lot fun things but my feet were so swollen the whole time - - I couldn’t believe!!! I’m gonna blame it on the humidity. But my pre-planned outfits were on point so I didn’t care too much.

Anyways… we got to announce the babes name to our friends and family that week and it just confirmed how much we loved her name - Rio Emerson Smith.

The day before my baby shower I went to Nordstrom to get a dress and found this cute one pictured above. The next day I put it on and it was like my boobs and belly had tripled in size. I could barely keep the gals in and the zipper was straining to stay put. After bailing my eyes out the whole way to the shower, I let it go and enjoyed showering Rio with love in the company of my friends and family.

The next day, we flew back home to celebrate our last Christmas as a family of 4 (us and the pups). This past week has been all about rearranging the house, setting up the crib and organizing Rio’s clothes.

I am so excited to continue this process and see what more things happen as we get closer to Rio’s arrival but I wanted to leave you with this one quote that has gotten me through this trimester.

“You can be both excited about your baby but also fucking angry, uncomfortable and complain about it.”

As a pregnant person, I love that quote. In this trimester I initially felt so much guilt when I would feel sick or would speak up about my back pain or my terrible heartburn but then I heard that quote and was like, YESSS! I can be both! I can love her lil kicks in my belly but also curse the fact that I can’t have a big ol glass of red wine. I can love seeing my belly grow but also cry histarically that I can’t button any of my jeans. Pregnancy is HARD both mentally and physically and I felt that there was this rule that you shouldn’t ever complain about it when harboring this miracle of life. But it is a lot on a person and it is a seemingly overnight shift. For any of you struggling, know you are not alone and its ok to be both in love with your growing human but also hate parts of the pregnancy symptoms. Ok rant over.

Countdown to April 3! Only 13 more weeks to go! until we get to hug and squeeze Miss Rio!!
